Making a Move

It seems like I discontinue blogs as life changes, and so it might come as no surprise that the end of The Awkward Adventurer is here.

Jay and I have decided to maintain a blog together, so I'm moving over to wearetheweiners.blogspot.com.

If you'd like to, make the move with me! There's an 'Email Updates' page where you can subscribe to receive blog posts in your inbox.

Venting: Life + 490 Square Feet

I read a book several years ago, and one of the main characters, when things were falling down around her, said: "life... nothing but more life".

I find myself saying that in my head.

Life is feeling a bit overwhelming right now. I know that eventually it will get better but in the moment it's easy to feel a bit hopeless.

{Note: I'm about to vent. If you get annoyed when people vent, you should probably stop reading now.}

Jay has been having some health issues that make him dizzy and feel faint. (The doctor says it's an inner ear inflammation which can be caused by a virus or allergies or by who knows what.) He took a week off work and didn't end up feeling much better. So, now he's back to work. We are commuting together in his car, partially because he can't drive and partly because my car has become unreliable. I love driving to work together, although it does mean I have to get up much earlier. I've been so spoiled working at home in comfortable clothes for quite some time. Now I'm doing my makeup and actually dressing in work clothes. It's a good change. I'd gotten too lazy.

It really stinks when someone you love isn't well. I've always known that love doesn't involve just doing fun things with someone, but experiencing the emotions that go along with an illness, or the extra work when one person is out of commission... it's taxing. I love this man so much... and seeing him feeling miserable makes me miserable. I'm looking forward to when he is feeling better and life gets back to (sort of) normal.

Back at home, I go through my ups and downs with regard to living in a studio apartment. Two people and their stuff in a small space (we measured recently and it's around 490 useable square feet) is a challenge. We don't have our own washer and dryer or dishwasher... and so normal everyday chores take more time.

I know that someday we will live somewhere with an actual bedroom and a washer and dryer and a dishwasher and a bathtub (seriously, it's so much easier to shave in a tub vs. a shower!)... but for right now, these are things we just can't change.

But, we're trying to focus on the things we can change. I've cleaned out my clothes and am getting rid of some of my favorite things that just don't fit anymore (insert more sad thoughts). We're searching Craigslist daily for a specific bookshelf from Ikea (a white 5x5 or 6x6 'expedit') so that we can divide the room (and maybe have people over without feeling awkward... "welcome to our bedroom everyone!").

Physically, I'm not feeling great. We just finished a diet that had been rather restrictive and I was feeling okay, then we went off it and I'm back to having a stomachache and a headache almost all the time. I hate this. I'm obviously doing something wrong.

I'm working, and doing my photography thing, and trying to be a good wife/daughter/friend... and I'm left feeling like it's just "nothing but more life."

Anyway, that's what's up. And now that I've vented, I feel a bit better.

I Kidnapped My Husband (A Weekend in Port Townsend)

Last month, I 'kidnapped' my husband for a surprise trip I'd been planning for weeks. It was the anniversary of our first time talking (so much has happened in a year!) and I wanted to celebrate that.

We left on Friday night after work in our little Geo convertible. (It's a fun little car, but unfortunately the rainy weather for the trip meant that we never got to put the top down.) Our destination: Port Townsend. Jay had never been there. I kept asking: "Can you guess where we are going yet?" But even as we passed road signs pointing the way to PT, he still was unsure. It was fun teasing him!

Port Townsend is a neat little town, with a thriving artistic community. I went there several times on family vacations, but of course being there as an adult is much different. I loved researching places to eat, visit and drive. I had the whole weekend planned downed to every meal!

Our hotel was a neat, old Victorian building with a lot of character (and a lot of stairs). One of our favorite features was the claw-foot tub. We love those!

We got up early on Saturday morning to eat breakfast at a cafe at the local airport with great reviews. The food was, as expected, delicious.

Then, we left for a whale watching tour (after a brief stop to pick up a few necessities at the store).

The tour took the entire day, with a 'layover' at Friday Harbor. We didn't see any whales in the morning, but took note of seals and birds, including a bald eagle nest. The stop at Friday Harbor was nice - we wandered through some shops, ate lunch at a farmer's market and sat on a bench enjoying the view.

After heading back to the boat, we took off again in search of whales. We ended up pretty far north in Canadian waters trying to find them. Finally, at the end of the day, we saw several transient orcas. While we didn't get to see as much of them as I have when I've gone whale watching in the past, it was still an impressive sight. Seeing such powerful animals in their natural environment always makes me thankful for this wonderful earth that we live on.

After docking, we went back to the hotel to change and then head out for dinner. We ate a a pub and had some of the most delicious jalapeƱo poppers in our lives. Of course, anything covered in bacon is good! :)

On Sunday, we slept in and took our time gathering our things to check out. We ate breakfast at a little cafe. The food was delicious and presented very nicely! We both ordered mochas that came in cups the size of bowls. I didn't like mine very much and so my sweet husband traded me (despite my protests). His coffee was delicious.

After breakfast, we meandered around PT, checking out some scenic spots. We toured a local cidery, where we sampled several kinds of cider and went on a tour of their grounds. We liked the cider so much that we bought several bottles to take home.

Our time in this little Victorian city ended at a local pizza place that has great reviews but lacks in the ambiance department. It's tiny, has folding chairs and no view. But the pizza was delicious!

After we finished eating, we got in the car and began the drive home.

It was our first trip since we got married (aside from our honeymoon) and the only one that I've planned so far. I loved it. It was a very memorable weekend.

We recorded some highlights and put them together. Since the trip, I've watched the video several times... usually when Jay is gone at work and I'm missing him. The first time we watched it, we both cried.

Love is wonderful. Memories together like this are priceless.

Rattlesnake Ridge

A few weeks ago, Jay and I went hiking with his sister + bro-in-law and a few other friends.

I must admit, I really struggled with this one. It was 2 miles one way and the peak was about 2,000 feet up. I huffed and puffed and whined on the way up... but once we got to the top, the view was gorgeous. RattlesnakeMay2012 1 RattlesnakeMay2012 4 RattlesnakeMay2012 2

Franklin Falls

Last Saturday, Jay and I decided to go on an adventure.

We headed up to Snoqualmie Pass to hike to Franklin Falls. It's a fairly short hike with a big payout.

The waterfall is gorgeous... and even though it was a bit cold, it was still quite refreshing to stand in the spray.
